Looking through carandclassic and I came across this little beauty I’d never heard of.

It’s a 1979 Mitsubishi Colt Celeste 1.6 ST.

Just look at this beauty.

Mitsubishi Colt Celeste 1.6 ST 1979 Very rare car with only 2 owners,

4 speed manual rear wheel drive, Factory stickers and still has blue protective film on the doors, Interior is totally factory and in perfect condition, 62500 miles and all old mot certs, car manuals, dealer showroom books, Haines manuals, Car has had a full respray done recently, 13" super lite alloy wheels included in the sale but original wheels are also their along with numerous spare parts which will all go with the car, Very hard to find cars of this age in this good of condition.

You also got the Colt Sapporo my dad had.

Same colour and everything as the one below except the bonnet scoop.

As the Plymouth Sapporo,

the Dodge Challenger,

and the Mitsubishi Challenger.

Sold in NA for model years 1976-80. A lot of these ended up as drag cars in Murka:

I imagine with the conditions in Limeyland, these rotted fast, and this one may be close to sole survivor status.

My dad’s was definitely a manual.

The thing I didn’t like about the Sapporo was the corduroy seat interior. Awful on bare skin if you were wearing shorts, the back of your legs would come out in red and white lines.

We don’t need front wing mirrors to park, our parking spaces are smaller than yours yes (most countries are) but they aren’t as tight as some of those in Japan.

I’ll agree with that, as I like preserved correct cars, and cringe when rare cars are cut up.

I suspect depreciation on these was steep when new, and even in dry areas, many were just about used up by the late 80s. It was either a trip to the junkyard or a trip to the drag car shop.

That’s the thing with many cars.

When they were losing there newness they became unwanted and undesirable.

But now, a lot of those once regularly saw cars have became desirable.

1983 Ford Fiesta Popular Plus 1 litre, 6,750 miles on the clock, £11,995.

1980 Ford Escort Mk2 2.0, £10,000.

1983 Ford Orion Mk1 1.6 Ghia, 21,270 miles on the clock,

Cars that were throw away but have survived, deserve to looked after and treated right.

Maybe because of better survival rates due to mild climates and lax inspections, smaller car survivors from that era here seldom carry such prices. A mint Citation or Tempo won’t break the bank today.

70s era Japanese era cars suddenly became hot, that’s a good case of something once abused and neglected becoming loved and collected.
